There will be a final agreement, I hope, next week
February's public finances have provided Alistair Darling with a very timely boost ahead of next Wednesday's budget. He now looks likely to have a little wriggle room in the budget to either cut borrowing or fund a few pre-election sweeteners. We suspect that he will choose the latter. Make no mistake, ...
The EU must concentrate on getting deficits down – and make sure we can achieve sustainable recovery. We are doing it in a way which is sustainable, manageable, and which does not damage the social and economic fabric of our country. My judgement is that this is the right thing to do, and that judgement...

It's the toughest and it is the most aggressive plan of any advanced economy
Alistair Darling has a real choice. He can make himself popular with his next-door neighbour by entering into pre-election giveaways, or he can follow the example of responsible Labour chancellors like Roy Jenkins, who put the national interest first, by announcing a clear plan for sorting out the count...
That would not then automatically mean it could go and operate in other European countries.
Even if the rate of deterioration in the public finances does show evidence of moderating in February, the data will hardly provide the most appetising of backdrops for Alistair Darling to present his Budget on 24 March
I am very, very clear that the two sides must try and sort this out without inconveniencing the public or having any adverse impact on the economy.
It sounds to me like the Chief Secretary is not really in command of his figures. We haven't heard from Alistair Darling, who's actually the person who's setting out the Budget. And that's the problem with this Government - lots of hints, leaks, gaffes, but not a clear plan to deal with Britain's debt.
Public services are vital to enabling the private sector to drive growth, rather than crowding out private endeavor like those dogmatically attached to cutting public spending think ... Public services are a right not a privilege.
We will consult on the idea, but as the Chancellor (finance minister Alistair Darling) has said - most people are convinced that far more disclosure is important, because they will then be able to see precise remuneration practices.

This has been the best job I could possibly have had and I have to say the reason we're doing well is because Alistair Darling will prove to have been one of the great Chancellors.
To remove support from the economy, as the Conservatives are suggesting, would be to risk derailing that recovery and risk tipping us back into recession
You can’t expect me to announce such decisions. Alistair Darling has been a brilliant chancellor. We’ve got to get through an election campaign.
Of course I stand by it - all of it, not just half of it, all of it.
Now, don't take this personally, but I'm going to tape it as well ... Michael Winner does it. Alistair Darling did it to me yesterday. I think it's a really good idea. And what with your editor calling me a pipsqueak last week, my hopes aren't high about this.
These are welcome figures but I cannot stress too much that we are living in very uncertain times.
