Some bus riders facing service cuts will likely be spared as the MTA revises its cost-cutting measures, authorities said Tuesday. After the outcry from commuters at last week's public hearings, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority is "making change Full Article at New York Daily News
Plus, an interactive look at some surprising census data from around the New York City area. With the ongoing MTA budget crunch, New Yorkers can expect significant changes to their commuting experience. WNYC reporter Matthew Schuerman and Gene... Full Article at WNYC | New York Public Radio
It is the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s time to listen to the public before voting next month on perhaps the most far-reaching service cuts in the system’s history. Gene Russianoff, attorney for the transit advocacy agency Straphangers... Full Article at Bayside Times
To handle the load, the MTA must run more buses and trains. "About 20 percent of the morning peak bus requirement is moving schoolkids," said Gene Russianoff of the Straphangers Campaign. "Anyone who's been on a city bus in the morning knows exactly... Full Article at Streetsblog

You have better odds winning Lotto than you do for getting caught by the NYPD for evading the fare on a bus ... This lack of enforcement by city police costs the MTA millions of dollars, money the MTA could use badly to meet a crippling deficit.

After slugging it out with five of the last six charter commissions, I am much more hopeful that this one will be fair, open and balanced
The MTA's only going to make jumping the turnstile more inviting by slashing scores of clerks from subway station entrances
That's why we encourage people to attend the public hearings
The most effective way to provide faster and more reliable bus service is to enforce bus lanes by cameras ... Sporadic and limited ticketing by police just doesn't keep bus lanes moving, free of illegally stopped cars.
These are the worst cuts in the 30 years that I have been privileged to fight on behalf of subway and bus riders ... These are the worst cuts I have ever seen.
Student MetroCards are an unbelievable savings for the city and state. If they had to ship older students to school on yellow buses, the cost would be astronomical
It’s clear that he and his administration don’t feel there’s much of a likelihood of an Albany bailout, so there’s only so many things you can do
I think it's a mistake to cut the station agents, and we said that a year ago when this was first proposed ... They're really a source of information and security for riders, whether it's giving you a map or teaching you how to use a MetroCard vending machine, or it's the beginning of your experience in...
Here we are in the midst of an economic downturn, and people are flocking to the transit system. So the idea of making them wait longer, would be even more crowded just is insane
It's just ridiculous to say that it costs zero
About 20 percent of the morning peak bus requirement is moving schoolkids ... Anyone who's been on a city bus in the morning knows exactly the truth of that.
What clearly needs to be done I think is to use stimulus money, use money from a jobs bill and the state Legislature and the City Council both need to step up to the plate to provide more funding to move 600,000 school children, which is what student MetroCards do every year
The MTA needs to do a much better job of reducing costs for managing its big projects
We support the 2nd Ave line, and east side access. But back in the 70s when the city had a big fiscal crisis, they put such projects on hold
these service cuts would mean -- despite the MTA's efforts to limit their impact -- longer waits, more crowding, slower trips and extra transfers for hundreds of thousands of riders ... This is no way for the MTA to treat its customers.

He's put them out on the table
I think the riding public shares his view ... They want bus service. They want easier ways of paying the fare. They want real-time information delays and my hope is he'll be able to deliver on those even though we're in a tough fiscal climate.
It's totally counterproductive ... You are building a major new park in Brooklyn and then you are turning off one of the main means of access to it? Now they expect us all schlep up and down the hill to get there.
There's been a tidal wave of opposition to killing student MetroCards, so I am not surprised the governor needs to respond positively
